Swedish Massage

Quick read: Swedish massage is a gentle, full-body massage that uses long, gliding strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, and joint movement.

How to do it

  1. 1 Prepare for your appointment by ensuring you are well-hydrated and relaxed. Discuss any specific concerns, pain points, or desired pressure levels with your massage therapist before the session begins.
  2. 2 You will be asked to undress to your comfort level (most often to underwear or fully nude) and lie on the massage table under a sheet or blanket. The therapist will leave the room to allow for privacy.
  3. 3 Lie in the position requested by the therapist, typically face down (prone) first. You will be professionally draped with a sheet throughout the massage, with only the area being worked on exposed.
  4. 4 During the massage, focus on your breathing and allow your body to relax into the movements. Provide feedback on pressure, comfort, or any areas that need more or less attention to ensure a personalized experience.
  5. 5 The therapist will use a combination of long, gliding strokes (effleurage), kneading (petrissage), friction (frictions), tapping (tapotement), and vibration (vibration) across different muscle groups.
  6. 6 After the massage is complete, the therapist will once again leave the room for you to re-dress. Take your time getting up from the table to avoid dizziness, especially if you felt deeply relaxed.
  7. 7 Drink plenty of water following your massage to help flush out metabolic waste and rehydrate your body. Expect to feel deeply relaxed, with improved muscle comfort and reduced overall tension.

Scientific background
Swedish massage is a gentle, full-body massage that uses long, gliding strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, and joint movement. It is designed to promote relaxation, reduce muscle tension, and improve circulation. The underlying principle involves manipulating superficial muscle layers to increase blood flow, warm muscle tissue, and release muscle knots. Research indicates that Swedish massage can significantly lower levels of stress hormones like cortisol, while boosting mood-enhancing neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. It is widely used by individuals seeking stress reduction, relief from mild muscle aches or stiffness, improved sleep quality, and overall well-being. Typically, a Swedish massage session lasts between 60 to 90 minutes and is implemented as a calming, therapeutic experience, often incorporated into a regular wellness routine or utilized for occasional relief.
