Acupuncture
Quick read: Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), involving the precise insertion of very thin needles into specific points on the body, known as acupoints.
How to do it
- 1 Consult with a Licensed Acupuncturist: Begin by finding a qualified and licensed practitioner. During your initial consultation, discuss your health history, symptoms, and treatment goals. The acupuncturist will diagnose based on TCM principles.
- 2 Prepare for the Session: Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to various body parts. Avoid heavy meals, caffeine, or alcohol immediately before your appointment. Inform your practitioner of any medications or health conditions.
- 3 Position Yourself: The acupuncturist will ask you to lie down on a treatment table, either face up, face down, or on your side, depending on the areas to be treated. Ensure you are comfortable and relaxed.
- 4 Needle Insertion: The practitioner will sterilize the acupoints and then gently insert very thin, sterile, disposable needles. You might feel a brief, mild prick or a dull ache/pressure sensation at the point of insertion, which usually subsides quickly. Needles are typically inserted to a depth of a few millimeters to a couple of centimeters.
- 5 Relax During Retention: Needles are usually left in place for 15-30 minutes. During this time, the acupuncturist might gently manipulate the needles (e.g., twirling) or apply mild electrical stimulation (electro-acupuncture). Use this time to relax deeply, breathe calmly, or meditate.
- 6 Needle Removal and Post-Treatment Care: The acupuncturist will carefully remove the needles. You may feel a slight tingling sensation. After removal, avoid strenuous activities immediately. Drink plenty of water and observe any changes in your symptoms. Some people feel relaxed, energized, or tired.
