Rhinitis / Runny Nose

Inflammation of the nasal mucous membrane, manifesting as congestion, nasal discharge, sneezing. Can be allergic (seasonal or perennial) or infectious (common cold). For allergic rhinitis, supplementation with quercetin, vitamin C, black seed oil, stinging nettle, bromelain may be indicated. For infectious rhinitis - see 'Respiratory Infections'.

What may help (10)

  • Bromelain Supplements HighClinical

This enzyme may alleviate symptoms of rhinitis, such as nasal congestion and inflammation, by reducing swelling in the nasal passages, especially beneficial in allergic cases.

  • Naturopathy Practices HighClinical

Naturopathic interventions for rhinitis, especially allergic rhinitis, focus on reducing inflammation and histamine release. Quercetin, vitamin C, black seed oil, stinging nettle, and bromelain demonstrate high probability in alleviating nasal congestion, discharge, and sneezing by stabilizing mast cells and providing anti-inflammatory effects.

  • MSM Supplements MediumClinical

Studies suggest that MSM may help alleviate symptoms of allergic rhinitis, such as nasal congestion and sneezing, by reducing inflammatory responses.

  • Quercetin Supplements MediumClinical

Rutin, as a precursor to quercetin, supports the body's efforts to reduce inflammation in the nasal passages, helping to soothe rhinitis symptoms.

  • Serrapeptase Supplements MediumClinical

Serrapeptase helps alleviate nasal congestion and inflammation in rhinitis, supporting clearer breathing and overall sinus comfort.

  • Chamomile Supplements LowPeople reports

The anti-inflammatory properties of chamomile may offer some relief for nasal congestion and irritation associated with rhinitis, particularly as a warm vapor.

  • Acupuncture Practices MediumTheoretical

Acupuncture is effective in moderately reducing symptoms of allergic rhinitis, such as nasal congestion and sneezing. It works by modulating the immune response and decreasing the release of inflammatory substances like histamine.

  • Herbalism / Phytotherapy Practices MediumTheoretical

For allergic rhinitis, Butterbur (Petasites hybridus), Quercetin, and Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) have shown moderate efficacy in reducing symptoms like nasal congestion and sneezing. Butterbur, in particular, has demonstrated comparable effects to antihistamines (effect size d=0.5-0.8) by stabilizing mast cells and acting as an anti-inflammatory agent.

  • Buteyko Method Breathing Practices LowClinical

Some clinical observations and smaller studies suggest that consistent practice of the Buteyko Method, by promoting habitual nasal breathing, may help alleviate symptoms of rhinitis. Encouraging proper nasal airflow can reduce inflammation and improve the filtering and humidifying functions of the nose, potentially leading to reduced congestion and nasal irritation over time. However, more definitive and robust research is required to establish strong statistical evidence.

  • Integral Yoga Practices LowTheoretical

Integral Yoga may offer minimal indirect support for rhinitis by potentially modulating inflammatory responses and reducing stress, which can exacerbate allergic or vasomotor symptoms, though specific evidence is limited.

  • Mindful Photography Practices HighClinical

Outdoor mindful photography may expose you to airborne allergens like pollen or mold spores, which can trigger symptoms of allergic rhinitis (e.g., sneezing, runny nose, congestion). Check local allergy forecasts and consider medication or indoor alternatives during high-pollen seasons.
