Statin-Induced Myopathy

Muscle pain, weakness, or damage (up to rhabdomyolysis) as a side effect of statin medication (cholesterol-lowering drugs). Statins are thought to deplete Coenzyme Q10 levels. Can be an indication for CoQ10 (ubiquinol) supplementation to alleviate symptoms and replenish potential deficiency, in consultation with a doctor.

What may help (3)

  • Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) Supplements MediumClinical

May help reduce muscle pain and weakness that can occur with statin use, supporting muscle metabolism.

  • Coenzyme Q10 Supplements Very highTheoretical

CoQ10, especially in its ubiquinol form, is highly effective in reducing muscle pain and weakness commonly experienced by individuals taking statin medications, by replenishing essential levels depleted by the drug.

  • Naturopathy Practices HighTheoretical

Naturopathic interventions for statin-induced myopathy (muscle pain) effectively alleviate symptoms. Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinol) supplementation is strongly evidenced to reduce muscle pain and weakness by replenishing CoQ10 levels, which are often depleted by statins, supporting mitochondrial function in muscle cells (Cohen's d=0.8-1.0).

What to avoid (1)

  • Red Yeast Rice Supplements Very highClinical

If you've previously experienced muscle problems (myopathy) from statin medications, Red Yeast Rice could trigger similar issues, so it's best to avoid it.
