Histamine Intolerance

A condition where the body cannot effectively break down histamine from food or produced internally. Symptoms are diverse: skin (rash, itching), GI (bloating, diarrhea), respiratory (nasal congestion), headaches, tachycardia. May indicate a need for DAO enzyme (diamine oxidase), quercetin, vitamin C, B6, copper, zinc (DAO cofactors). Contraindicated/require caution: supplements that release histamine or block DAO (some probiotics, NAC in some people), fermented supplements.

What may help (6)

  • Copper Supplements HighClinical

As a vital cofactor for the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO), copper is essential for breaking down histamine in the gut. Adequate copper levels can help manage symptoms of histamine intolerance by supporting the body's natural histamine clearance.

  • Naturopathy Practices HighClinical

Naturopathic approaches for histamine intolerance aim to support histamine breakdown and reduce its release. DAO enzyme supplementation, along with quercetin, vitamin C, and vitamin B6 (cofactors for DAO), show high therapeutic probability in alleviating diverse symptoms by enhancing histamine metabolism.

  • Herbalism / Phytotherapy Practices MediumClinical

Quercetin, a flavonoid found in many plants, and Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) may offer moderate benefits for histamine intolerance. They are believed to stabilize mast cells, reducing histamine release, and possess anti-inflammatory properties. While direct studies on histamine intolerance are limited, evidence from allergic conditions supports their histamine-modulating effects (d=0.3-0.5 for anti-allergic actions).

  • Probiotics Supplements MediumClinical

Certain probiotic strains have the ability to break down histamine in the gut, which can be beneficial for individuals experiencing symptoms of histamine intolerance.

  • Quercetin Supplements MediumClinical

Quercetin helps stabilize cells that release histamine, which can be beneficial for managing symptoms associated with histamine intolerance.

  • Vitamin C Supplements MediumClinical

May help in the metabolic breakdown of histamine in the body and exhibit antihistamine effects, potentially reducing symptoms in individuals sensitive to histamine.

What to avoid (3)

  • N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) Supplements MediumClinical

NAC may influence histamine levels. If you have histamine intolerance, it could potentially worsen symptoms like headaches, skin rashes, or digestive upset.

  • Consume Probiotics Habits LowClinical

Certain probiotic strains can produce histamine, which may exacerbate symptoms like headaches, hives, or digestive issues in individuals with histamine intolerance. Opt for low-histamine or histamine-degrading strains.

  • Histidine Supplements Very highTheoretical

If your body struggles to break down histamine, taking Histidine may increase histamine levels and worsen symptoms like skin rashes, digestive issues, or headaches.
