Ear Infection / Otitis

Inflammation of any part of the ear: outer (otitis externa, 'swimmer's ear'), middle (otitis media, common in children), or inner (labyrinthitis). Most often caused by bacterial or viral infection. Symptoms include ear pain, fullness, hearing loss, sometimes fever, ear discharge (if eardrum perforates). **Requires examination by a doctor (ENT)** for diagnosis and treatment (often antibiotics for bacterial otitis media, ear drops). Supplements like Vitamin D, Zinc, Probiotics (especially nasopharynx-colonizing strains), Xylitol (in gum/syrup for children) may play a role in **preventing** recurrent otitis media, but do not replace treatment for acute infection.

What may help (3)

  • Naturopathy Practices MediumClinical

Naturopathic approaches to ear infection prevention, particularly recurrent otitis media, focus on immune support and mucosal health. Vitamin D, zinc, and specific probiotic strains, along with xylitol for children, show moderate efficacy in reducing infection frequency by enhancing local and systemic immunity.

  • Probiotics Supplements MediumClinical

Specific probiotic strains, particularly those colonizing the nasopharynx, may help reduce the frequency of ear infections, especially in young children.

  • Serrapeptase Supplements MediumClinical

Serrapeptase can assist in reducing inflammation and fluid accumulation in the ear, providing adjunctive support for discomfort associated with ear infections.

What to avoid (2)

  • Swimming Practices HighClinical

Swimming with an active ear infection can worsen it or lead to re-infection; use waterproof earplugs or avoid swimming until healed.

  • Cycling Practices MediumClinical

An inner ear infection (labyrinthitis) can cause severe vertigo and balance issues, making cycling extremely unsafe due to a high risk of falls and injury. Avoid cycling until symptoms resolve.
